E10 Yukon Cornelius- The Shadow on the Ridge

SFX: Soft crackling as vacuum tubes warm up in an old console radio. Static fades as the dial tunes in...

The whole family gathers 'round again—settling in for the next thrilling chapter...

ANNOUNCER: (rich, warm, with a hint of urgency) The Yukon Quest Theater presents… Episode 10: The Shadow on the Ridge—where secrets from across the Iron Curtain threaten the peace of Grizzly Gulch, and one man's faith faces the chill of suspicion!

MUSIC: Tense orchestral swell with subtle balalaika undertones, swirling wind, and distant sled bells

Our indomitable hero, Yukon Cornelius, ever vigilant in the North!

NARRATOR: A week after Twelfth Night, 1952. Grizzly Gulch thrives anew—the bridge stands firm, water runs clear, spirits run high. But Yukon Cornelius can't shake the memory of that lone watcher on the ridge, scribbling notes as Father Dimitri departed.

YUKON CORNELIUS: (muttering to himself, pickaxe clinking) Somethin' ain't right. That fella wasn't bird-watchin'...

NARRATOR: Word comes via dogsled mail: Father Dimitri never reached his parish up north. Tracks vanish in a fresh blizzard. Whispers spread—defection? Kidnapping? Or worse?

Meanwhile, a stranger arrives in town: Comrade Viktor Petrov, claiming to be a "geological surveyor" from Alaska's border regions. Smooth accent, sharp eyes, too many questions about the priest's mineral kits.

SFX: Boots crunching snow, saloon doors creaking.

PETROV: (suave, accented) Your Father Dimitri... fascinating man. Such knowledge of ores. Perhaps he shared secrets before leaving?

TOWNSFOLK: (murmurs of suspicion)

NARRATOR: Yukon sniffs trouble. He rallies old friends—the Mountie from afar, engineer Sam Thorne (back for repairs)—and sets out to track Dimitri.

SFX: Dogsled whooshing through snow, howling wind.

They find signs: overturned sled, signs of struggle. Then—a hidden camp. Petrov and two silent aides, interrogating a bound Father Dimitri under lantern light!

The shadowy watchers revealed—Cold War intrigue in the frozen wilds...

PETROV: (cold, demanding) The maps from your exile days—the rare earth deposits near the border. Give them to Moscow, or freeze here forever!

FATHER DIMITRI: (calm, steadfast) My only map is to the Kingdom not of this world. Force yields no truth—only paradox: the more you grasp, the less you hold.

NARRATOR: Yukon bursts in like an avalanche!

YUKON CORNELIUS: (booming roar) Lick my pickaxe, you Red skunks! Nobody threatens a guest in my North!

SFX: Chaos—fists cracking, snow crunching, chase through drifts, gunshots echoing harmlessly wide.

A whirlwind pursuit: Yukon and allies on sleds, outwitting the agents with frontier cunning—avalanches triggered, trails looped. Chesterton echoes: Petrov's rigid plans crumble against humble improvisation.

In the climax, atop a frozen ridge, Petrov slips—literally—his pride sending him tumbling into a snowbank. Dimitri freed, agents fleeing south with empty hands.

FATHER DIMITRI: (gentle, to Yukon) Again, the fool triumphs. Providence favors the generous heart.

YUKON CORNELIUS: (hearty laugh) And a good swing of the pickaxe don't hurt!

Father Dimitri, steadfast in the storm...

NARRATOR: Dimitri continues to his parish, secrets safe. Grizzly Gulch breathes easier—but eyes now watch the borders sharper.

ANNOUNCER: (mid-show commercial) Folks, power through your own adventures with Columbia Grain Mills Steel-Cut Oats—real steel-cut oats for a quick, hearty, nutritious breakfast. Just like Yukon Cornelius relies on after chasin' shadows in the snow—for a great start to the day!

MUSIC: Upbeat jingle fade.

ANNOUNCER: (closing) What new threats lurk beyond the ridge? Join us next week for more chills and thrills!

MUSIC: Dramatic swell with lingering tension, fade out.

ANNOUNCER: Folks, tune in next week for another exciting episode of the Adventures of Yukon Cornelius, King of the North!
